Citing deadlines and the desire to explore other creative outlets, FoxTrot creator Bill Amend has announced that the December 30 cartoon will be the last daily FoxTrot strip. The wildly popular strip will begin a Sunday-only publication schedule on December 31. Click on the following links to read the full press release and follow-up article from Universal Press Syndicate. There is also a nice article on MSNBC.com, in which pop culture writer Gael Fashingbauer Cooper reacts to the FoxTrot announcement.
FYI - FoxTrot will continue to be sent out in daily My Comics Page emails even after the strip goes to its new Sunday-only schedule. Classic FoxTrot strips will run Monday through Saturday; the new Sunday strips will run on Sundays. And My Comics Page members will continue to have unlimited access to 10+ years of daily FoxTrot cartoons through the My Comics Page archives. If you aren't already a member, you can sign up for My Comics Page here.

FoxTrot is NOT the first thing I read in the comics.
It's the last.
Because it's the best.
Thanks for the years, Bill!

Mr. Amend, I admire you for getting out when you knew it was time. Why don't the numerous others do the same? To wit:
Family Circus
Beetle Bailey
Born Loser
Blondie
Hi & Lois
Hagar
Marmaduke
Garfield (though not bad recently)
Heatcliff
Dennis the Menace
Ziggy
Shoe (BOO!)
Crock
Wizard of ID
BC
Momma
Dick Tracy
Brenda Starr
Andy Capp
Thank God for Ink Pen, Pearls, Speed Bump and Lio.

Even the best cool off after a while, I respect it when artists no longer feel they can deliver the quality they want to give.
Garfield is the best example of something that started funny and dried up, better to burn out than to rust.

About time! Foxtrot is a tired, weak strip that should have
been retired years ago. It's only appeal is to grandmothers
and kids under 8 years old.

Peanuts remained fairly consistent over 50 years, so there are exceptions. still, we need to purge the comics of anything over 25 years old, no longer written by their original artists, or just plain not funny, profound or insightful. garfield, mallard fillmore, family circus, prickley city, dennis the menace, CATHY, and others need to be removed. long lives pearles before swine, get fuzzy and zits!

I salute Mr Amend's decision - as many have said before me, better to quit while ahead than to let it die a slow death.
Good luck Paige, Jason, Roger, Andy, and Peter. You've been good for a million laughs, and while I may not get all the jokes, I get the good ones.

I agree, better to make a graceful exit than let it die a lingering death. A couple people mentioned Garfield; although the last few weeks have introduced a refreshing new plot twist, Garfield just hasn't been the same since he started walking on two legs. Get the books, up to about the eighth or ninth, they are terrifically funny! And if you don't like Mallard Fillmore, you're a Communist.

Thanks for all the FoxTrot laughs you have given my family. I'll look forward to the Sundays comics. Long live Get Fuzzy, Pearls Before Swine, and most certainly Herman.

Ignore 'Fredgardo' -- an acronym for his name is 'rag fodder' (much more appropriate, I think). FoxTrot was/is a wonderful strip, which equals only Dilbert for my funny bone needs.

Man, that is a total bummer, That's one of my favorite strips; I read it every day, as well as some of the books that have been released. At least we'll still get a Sunday strip. As far as I'm concerned, it's better than nothing. (I don't miss Boondocks, but I do miss Calvin and Hobbes).

Thank you Bill.
I've read your strip for many of years~ You have captured a spot in history, and my heart-

Fox Trot is certainly one of my favorites. They don't run it in our local paper, so I have to read it on-line. It truly is one of the only comics that understand the term "comic". It is probably the only comic that makes me laugh. Other than my all-time favorite, For Better or for Worse, this one came in second.
As far as The Boondocks goes, I certainly won't miss it as it was racist in reverse (it's okay for blacks to be racist, but not whites).
Good luck, Mr. Amend. I appreciate the fact that you haven't actually killed the comic, just scaled it back.

I have a tattoo of Calvin & Hobbes for the last 10+ years. They were the best. Pearls before swine is great, pooch cafe and even get fuzzy!!
Foxtrot was great! It will be missed.

Everything has a life span; just as your favorite dog has to die, they stop making your favorite snack chip just when it becomes available at the store around the corner from you, your favorite TV show gets cancelled because no-one but you and your friends recognize it's brilliance......How many of you have decided to make a mid-life change because you KNEW it was time?
Thanks, Bill, for all the joy and laughter you have brought into the world, good luck in whatever you do next, and let's all look forward to the next cartoon strip that captures that certain something that touches us!

Garfield has been around since 1978! Garfield is not worthless. Just put 'Frank & Ernest' on sundays only! No one reads 'Frank & Ernest' anyway!

It makes me sad; Foxtrot is such a great strip and has been a big part of my day for the past several years. Unfortunately the final decision is up to Bill and it is now irreversible. We can only hope that he will find time to incorporate some other media for his beloved characters. Personally, I hope that he puts some cool new stuff on his webpage. If it does end up making it to the big screen, I really hope it doesn’t turn out like Garfield did. It was ok, but I don’t think it really was an accurate reflection of the strip and the plot was kind of stupid. I do like that way that Bill is going out though, you have to give congrats to a guy willing to punish himself by ripping on his own decision.
In conclusion I would like to reiterate the above comment and would like to join “Taylor” in saluting this great strip. It was great for the past eighteen years and it is better for him to quit while he’s ahead. I will look forward to some amazing Sundays and the continuation of this great strip.

Kudos for going out on his own terms rather then getting burned out. And for us fans who at least get a weekly dose. I wish we could get Sunday only for Calvin & Hobbes and Far Side.
I weep for Bloom County's Brethed who got fired when Trump bought the syndicate because he didn't like the parody. Lesser men may have completely quit, but we had Outland and now Opus. I hope he regains as much success as he wants.
Posted by: Tom | December 26, 2006 at 09:12 AM
Tom, you have some of your facts wrong. Trump has never owned a syndicate. Breathed's syndicate is owned by Rosie O'Donnell.

While I will miss the daily Fox Trot strip, at least we will still have Sunday editions of it; this way, it will not be like other strips that have retired permanently.
Just be glad that we are still going to be entertained by the Fox family! :)

I've only recently goten into FoxTrot when my wife found an anthology in a charity shopbook. I can't get the books in my local bookshops without going through the lengthy process of ordering any specially, extra cost and all that, and I don't trust ordering online (Amazon and all that). The Foxes are brilliant, but the only way I can get the strip is online. It's sad 'cos I like the feel and look of books, and the newspapers in GB don't run FoxTrot. I love Bloom County (never got into Outland),and now Opus, Calvin and Hobbes, some Garfield (though it's a little puerile these days), Dilbert, and now Pibgorn (online only). I guess I like my cartoons to have a bit of bite. Thanks for what you've done so far, Mr Amend!
