Leave it to Poncho, the altruistically-challenged canine star of Pooch Café, to take a life-threatening situation and make it hilarious. In this week's series, which began on January 29th, Poncho's owner, Chazz, is immobilized by appendicitis. Poncho heroically (okay, heroically for Poncho) calls 911, then...makes a sandwich. Say what you want about his courage, but Poncho definitely knows how to keep his cool in an emergency. If you haven't been reading Pooch Café, check it out. Everyday, Paul Gilligan playfully takes the concept of "man's best friend" and turns it on its head, yet somehow still delivers a character that is as amusing and endearing as any in comics.
And on a serious note, a Public Service Announcement: Appendicitis is no laughing matter outside the bounds of a comic strip. Check out WebMD's appendicitis page for information on symptoms and treatment. (And before you even ask - no, there are no sandwich suggestions.)

oustandingly hilarious strip. I loved the series where that had to breakdance to save Pooch Cafe from being demolished. Poo Poo and Hudson are a riot too. Top 5 of all time!

This has eclipsed Get Fuzzy as my favorite dog strip.

Didn't he do a similar strip to this one?

Best strip ever!

Poncho rocks- Who else would make a sandwich in such a time of despair--t

Get Fuzzy is a fine strip but pooch cafe has that edge (just like the Colts over the Bears)

Pooch is a thinking person's strip. It's more for educated and fabulous people.
Get Fuzzy is more of a litttle kids' strip or for people who were too dumb to graduate from high school. Or like a baby whose fascinated with shiny objects or someone whose parents won't let them go near matches because they're dangerous.

Like you said, Pooch has that edge of Fuzzy but I still would like to see more of his other characters. It is good to know that there is another pet-oriented strip that goes beyond the obvious Garfield-esque humor. Also, does he really look like that in his bio page?

I used to have a little mixed breed dog named Bertram. He acted exactly like Poncho ... except he could not talk. He loved people food and he would sometimed disappear for days. He did not like my Uncle Saul though. He would bark at him. He made me laugh!

I read Poncho every day. It's the shiznet. And I know my whole table of science club thinks Poncho is the best thing since Snoopy died.

I gotta agree with Taylor- Get Fuzzy is LOL funny sometimes, but this one is "eh".

Sorry, I meant I agree with Mikhail. And Taylor, in your comments about GF I think you're thinking of "Family Circus".

Sure Duranimal, you take it away. I had a typo in my last entry--I meant to say that Pooch Cafe has an edge over Fuzzy--t

Get Fuzzy is beautifully illustrated and the writing is clever, but it is rarely funny. Pooch is simply, but effectively drawn and packs more laughs per strip than any comic I've read since the Far Side.

Dear Moronkail Kalastupidov; i hope my gerbil is as smart as you someday. Because anyone who thinks Get Fuzyy has been fuuny the last three years has the brain the size of a walnut. I bet you think Funky Winkerbean is a great trip too.
