Stone Soup welcomed a new member to the family over the weekend! Strip co-stars Joan Stone and hubby Wally Weinstein are the proud parents of...well, we don't want to ruin the surprise here, so read the strip below!
Creator Jan Eliot says that this story - particularly the fact that the couple decided beforehand to deliver the baby at home, not in a hospital - triggered a lot of response from fans. You can read Universal Press Syndicate's article about the fan reaction here.

I just discovered Stone Soup and the midwife storyline. YAY! I'm now a new fan! I had a home birth with a midwife 10 years ago. It was the best birthing experience ever.
If I had given birth in a hospital, with some of the "complications" I had - pushing the baby out in 3 pushes - they would have given me pitocin to slow the contractions to allow the doctor time to arrive. Instead I pushed her out in 3 pushes, no tears. No cuts needed. No meds. Very little pain and discomfort. Absolutley perfect!
Thank you, Jan, for showing home birth in such a positive light!!

I have been following Stone Soup since "Sister City" days (This was the name of her strip before it was picked up in syndication.) Jan is celebrated local here in Eugene, Oregon and once a few years ago she honored me with a short email exchange with advice when I was trying to start my own toon. Later I had the distinct honor of meeting her in person at a local stand-up comedy revue where she was one of the judges.
She is an awesome person.
Long live "Stone Soup"...and Jan Eliot!
