At Christmastime, Cathy's frenzies of shopping and saving are especially easy to relate to. Tapping the keyboard vigorously in the belief that it will speed up an order seems illogical, but who among us hasn't hammered away at the "send" or "process order" command with the hope it could sense our urgency?
As funny as this is, I really, really don't like this idea. Old men using technology to spy on young people is something my parents have sternly warned against ever since I posted my phone number on MySpace along with those racy swimsuit pics. Plus, Santa is supposed to just know this kind of thing. Fortunately the Google Earth technology in my area is nowhere near the resolution needed to discern facial expressions. I've seen more than a couple strips depict Santa either asking for or being asked for a bailout of some kind. The Santa in this La Cuca Sunday could easily be a stand-in for a newspaper publisher addressing the difficulties of adapting to an online business model. However, what really drew me to this strip was the title panel: a polar bear fending off aliens from the North Pole with a ray-gun. If that's not a powerful Christmas scene, I don't know what is.
