Editorial cartoonist Pat Oliphant was on hand at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, where he was the recipient of an Inkpot Award celebrating his illustrious career in cartooning. The Inkpot Award was presented by Gary Sassaman, Director of Print and Publications for Comic-Con International.
Oliphant was the focus of a special panel entitled "Spotlight on Oliphant." The Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist was joined on the stage by commentator Harry Katz, who conducted an interview of Oliphant while the cartoonist created presidential caricatures. Katz is the former Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Library of Congress, where many of Oliphant's original syndicated works are part of a permanent collection that can be viewed in perpetuity.
Since 1974, Comic-Con International has awarded the Inkpot Awards, an achievement award given to special Comic-Con guests as well as members of Comic-Con's committee and Board of Directors.
Other recipients of the 2009 Inkpot Awards included Mike Allred, Nicola Cuti, Stan Freberg, John Kricfalusi, Dwayne McDuffie, Chris Oliveros, Seth, Barry Short, Mike Towry, Ramón Valdiosera Berman, Bob Wayne, and Phil Yeh.
