We are officially in the height of the wedding season. August and September are two of the most popular months of the year to get married and our GoComics cartoonists are picking up on this reality. Weddings are meant to be a time of celebration, happiness and renewed belief in the existence of true love. They are also, however, a stressful time, not only for those planning weddings and getting married but also for wedding guests.
Allow me to take you into a woman’s mind when they open a wedding invitation. There is a steady stream of questions that ensue. First, there is the instant question of, “What do I wear?” Next, “Where are they registered and what do I get the happy couple?” Followed by, “Who else was invited?” And finally, the sometimes dreaded, “Who do I ask to be my date?”
I also might mention that all of these questions come in the 5.7 seconds after opening the invitation.
Cathy Guisewite has run this anxiety-filled story line in her Cathy comic strips since the middle of August. She has comically brought to light all the sporadic worries that go though a woman’s head when she is invited to a wedding.
Julie Larson, in her Friday Aug. 31 Dinette Set panel, also brought in this wedding theme. Larson poked fun at the all too real behaviors behind buying wedding gifts. I don’t blame Joy and Burl one bit for trying to play off buying a discounted gift for full price – attending weddings can get expensive especially if you have been invited to more than one.
I wish I could offer to you an official survival guide to the wedding season but I can’t. Being 22, I am new to the whole phenomenon myself. I can, however, give you a YouTube video of the famous entrance of Jill and Kevin’s big day to help you get excited for any upcoming weddings that you may be attending.
