Today's Pearls Before Swine contains a moving and visually innovate tribute to the young victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. Pearls creator Stephan Pastis created the memorial comic in the days after the tragedy, but due to print deadlines, decided to schedule it to run exactly one month later. So far the comic has clearly resonated with readers, with over 100 comments on GoComics at the time of this blog post.
The events in Newtown and the ensuing debates about gun control and mental health policies have been the subject of dozens of editorial cartoons in the last month, but it's particularly arresting to see this solemn subject matter and moment of silence in a strip that is usually known for its sarcasm, puns and slapstick humor.
Credit Stephan for stretching the form to create an original and moving memorial, and thanks to our digital production specialist, Paula, who fine-tuned separate files for the Web and for print clients to make sure it showed up well in both formats. The events of 12/14/12 have shaken all of us, and today's Pearls provides a poignant reminder to pause and reflect on the value of human life and the ways in which the most unspeakable tragedies can unite a nation.
