The Reuben Awards are the comic industry's version of the Oscars. Each year, the best and most notable work gets acknowledged by the National Cartoonists Society for a wide array of categories. The equivalent of the "Best Director" and "Best Picture" awards is the "Outstanding Cartoonist Of The Year". We're very proud to share that two of this year's three nominees are a part of the GoComics famly!
Stephan Pastis, creator of Pearls Before Swine, is receiving his eighth nomination for the prize. The comic has been recognized by many as one of the best in the genre for the past decade. It's quick, thoughtful, smart and Pastis isn't afraid to make himself the straight man for many of the jokes. According to the strip, Pastis is also being considered by The Vatican for the open Papal position. However, I'm sure that he'd settle for "Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year".
Brian Crane, creator of Pickles, is welcoming his third nomination in the category and received the category's award in 2001. Pickles is also a fan favorite, with Crane having drawn the comic for over 20 years. The main characters, Opal and Earl Pickles, are irreverent grandparents, material that comes easy for the grandfather comic creator.
The third nominee is Rick Kirkman, co-creator of Baby Blues, whose books are published by our sister company, Andrews McMeel Publishing.
The winner will be announced at the Reuben Awards on Memorial Day weekend in Pittsburgh. Read more about the organization and the awards here. Good luck and congrats to all of our creators!
