Thanks to our Associate Editor, Lucas, for this week's Staff Pick: Back in 2006, when Bill Amend announced that he was retiring daily FoxTrot strips, I cried. But when Tom Gammill announced in 2013 that his daily exclusive-to-GoComics family strip, The Doozies, would only run twice a week, I wailed. Was this the beginning of the end? Thankfully, no. The Doozies has only gotten stronger (or at the least no less wonderful than usual) from June 2013 to June 2014. Let's look at what's taken place in that time:
• Dean switched from regular cigars to bubble gum cigars:
• His camera was destroyed by a philandering lovebird:
• He slept through the first 5 days of the new year:
• He offended the cleaning Lady:
• His "haunted pants" got thrown in with the same load of laundry as the sheets, with spooktacular results:
Another thing that happens pretty frequently in the world of the Doozies: People die. Famous people, to be specific. Whether it's Ann B. Davis (of the Brady Bunch) or Roger Ebert, Tom Gammill pays tribute to departed celebs with a special "rest in peace" strip. Below is one of my favorite Doozies RIP strips in recent memory:
Fortunately, the tears in this strip are only shed to artfully conceal a wink between the cartoonist and the reader. I could read this strip all day long, and on one occasion I even hijacked a friend's computer to scroll through them one by one until we found The Doozies strip in which the cat proudly proclaims "YOLNT." It took a while, but we both agreed it was time well spent. My friend even described reading The Doozies as a safe, legal alternative to laughing gas. I highly encourage you to drop by "The Doozies" and see for yourself.
