After 30 years and more than 130 missions, NASA's space shuttle fleet will be retired this year. As part of the anniversary celebration, Brian Basset, creator of Red and Rover, was chosen to commemorate the program with a 30th Anniversary poster.
GoComics is joining the celebration by giving away ten of these beautiful commemorative posters, autographed by Brian Basset. Did You Know: In 2004, Basset became the only cartoonist to have his space-themed comic strips displayed at NASA's headquarters in Washington. On July 26, 2005, Basset's original drawing commemorating NASA's return to flight after the Columbia accident launched aboard shuttle Discovery on the STS-114 mission.
Politico.com has a great piece on Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Tom Toles, who will be honored Tuesday with the Herblock Prize. Toles talks about being dragged into editorial cartooning by Douglas Turner, his editor at the Buffalo Courier-Express:
“I said ‘No, I don’t want to do that,’” Toles recalled. “‘I don’t have the skills. I don’t have the interest. I don’t have the knowledge.’ That seems like a pretty good case, right? Three disqualifiers.”
But Turner wanted him to try it anyway, so he did. “I kept trying to get out of it. Hated it. Just hated it. And I was pretty bad, in my opinion. But he just kept at it and at it and at it.”
Jim's Journal is back! The 90s college newspaper sensation makes its return to comics today, only on GoComics.com.
Created by Scott Dikkers (who also created The Onion), Jim's Journal debuted in The Daily Cardinal, a student paper at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in 1987. The strip, which Dikkers described as "anti-humor," featured no punch lines or gags - it simply offered the mundane daily observations of its understated titular protagonist, Jim. The oddball, Zen-like strip became a national sensation.
Jim's Journal was eventually carried in more than 200 college newspapers in the 90s and was published in six print collections that hit the bestseller list. Dikkers retired the strip in 1997.
The re-launched Jim's Journal will feature a mix of old and new material, beginning with a prequel that finds Jim ready to graduate high school.

"Always Hitting a Nerve: Editorial Cartoons by Ben Sargent," a retrospective exhibit of Pulitzer Prize-winner Ben Sargent's 35-year career in editorial cartooning, opens today at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History in Austin, Texas.
The exhibit will be open to the public through August 31 at the Briscoe Center’s Research and Collections Division, located in Sid Richardson Hall, Unit 2.
Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. For more information on hours and location, call (512) 495-4518.

40: A Doonesbury Retrospective is nominated in the Best Archival Collection/Project - Strips category. Doonesbury and the Art of G. B. Trudeau, by Brian Walker, is nominated for Best Comics-Related Book.
