Sherpa Highlight -- Adult Children

Working in the comics industry is the greatest. I get to read the classics every day, like Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield, Dilbert, Doonesbury and Peanuts. Discovering new comics, however, is also another fantastic part of my job! I often browse the Sherpa section of GoComics.com to find new up-and-coming comics that I can follow.

 

My latest find is Adult Children by Stephen Beals.

 

I think I am fond of this one because it may or may not chronicle my life as a newly working adult. The panel layout is often unique and inviting to the reader.

Happy New Year! Our team is back to the grind, with new comics, giveaways and ways to reach and entertain you.

 

Every year brings about new commitments for positive changes. I'm not big on making resolutions, but I do like challenging myself to do something different each year. This year, we want to present you with a challenge that can help improve your life: The GoComics Monthly Reading Challenge.  

 

It's pretty simple. We know that you like comics. The ask: Try a new comic once a month, for a week. If you like it -- it's a new thrill in your life. If not, shake it off; don't let it affect you too much and keep reading. Either way, let us know. I can't say enough how much we love hearing from readers and fans. Your feedback truly affects our decision making on what we share, what we choose to give away and how we interact with the comic world. On Facebook, drop us a line on our page. On Twitter, do the same with our @GoComics account and use the hashtag #NewComic. We'll have special rewards for select fans who reach out to us. 

 

To start off, here's one that I've recently gotten into: Drew Litton's comic panels. Technically considered an editorial cartoonist, Drew tackles (pun intended) the sports world and current events twice a week.

 

 

 

Another recent discovery: Richard's Poor Almanac, from the brilliant mind of Richard Thompson (Cul De Sac).

The silly and saucy antics of Marshal Mask and his motley mob of maladjusted misfits were an immediate hit with the paper's 7.5 million readers. About the strip: 
McArroni is about a slightly fat bird and his eccentric friend, Amadeo. Both are going to have amazing adventures in this dialogue-free format strip, not always finding the easiest way to solve problems. McArroni is in love with Anis but she doesn't seem to be too enthusiastic about it. As a hobby, McArroni and Amadeo will try once in a while to kill a shy and peaceful cat. Sometimes they are even cute characters.

Welcome to Dixie Drive, the main drag through that little town up the road. Make a right or left onto any side street and who knows what or who you might come across. These folks are as unpredictable as a squirrel in the street on a hot summer’s day and they don’t care what you think about it. They’re not hurting anybody, (except maybe themselves). they’re just playing their cards with the hand they were dealt, so stand back and we’ll see what they come up with next. The folks near Dixie Drive might reside in some backwater southern town and some of their weirdness may be particularly “Southern” but don’t kid yourself, this is Small Town America: the same animal from Portland East to Portland West. Woof!

My Secret Treat … I'm Sharing It With You.

 

 

 

 

 

Earlier in life, my friends and family might've said that I was guilty of a fear of commitment. Not in the sense of being good to my word, but always having a plan of escape. A backup plan. When riding in a car, I was the kid who took mental note of the signs and highways. If I bought a snack and didn't want my little sister to eat it while I was out, I'd hide it in an odd place. In fact, my mom probably could still find a roll of Oreos hidden under the kitchen sink.  

 

Here at GoComics, I've reacquired my habit. My secret treat has been the Comics Sherpa part of the site. What is that? Well, comics fans, it's the area where up-and-coming artists are honing their craft. New comics on a daily basis that you haven't heard about. Some of my favorites are Adult Children by Stephen Beals and Peanizles by Don Mathias. Quick, clever, clean art and most of all, funny. Comics Sherpa is a little more raw than the GoComics page, in that its content is directly posted by the creators.
