When Jan Eliot included a “Charity House” as part of a Stone Soup storyline in March of 2004, she had no idea the impact it would have on the comic strip, her fans and her own life.
It began simply enough: Stone Soup sisters Holly and Alix were visiting Aunt Marge in California for what they thought would be a fun spring break beach vacation. It was only when they arrived that they found out about the “Charity House” they would be
helping build.

The story caught the attention of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI), who asked to rerun the strips, and a relationship was formed.
Since that time Jan has gone on to participate in two Women Build projects, created artwork for the Katrina rebuild effort, and has been a participant in numerous other HFHI events. Most recently she traveled to Chiang Mai, Thailand to lend a hand and her pencil as part of the 2009 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project.
This month we at GoComics would like to celebrate the spirit of the work that Jan has done and the countless lives that have been changed by Habitat for Humanity. With Jan’s
assistance we’ve created limited edition merchandise to benefit the non-profit housing organization. The entire profit from the sale of this merchandise from June 5 – 30, 2010 will benefit Habit for Humanity. In addition, our parent company, Andrews McMeel Universal, will be matching 100% of the donation.
So even if you can’t roll up your sleeves and swing a hammer, you can still help eliminate poverty housing and homelessness through your actions.
